Magickal Words
from a Crone

I have often said, that in days gone by, when one reads about the various histories or philosophies of Pagan paths, three quarter of the book would be about spirituality and one quarter would be about the magic.
There would be maybe four of five pages dedicated to magical practice.
Today, when one buys a book on Pagan paths three quarters are dedicated to the magical practice and only one quarter will be about the spirituality.
I am a girl of the old school. I do not follow this path for the power of any magic, other then the magic of the universe.
I believe there are laws to the universe.
Simple as that.
I believed it when I was 8 years old and under the tutelage of Sister Mary Margaret in St John's school. I believe it more now. It has nothing to do with being Pagan, Wiccan, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist.
I believed it when I was 8 years old as that was just how the world seemed to work to me. This was just what I knew, innately, to be true.
I believe it more now, as that is what my experience has been, that is what has been revealed to me.
All those faiths believe it as well. All those faiths have tenets built into them that teach the laws of the universe.
They may change the name of the law. They may rename that energy of the universe that drives those laws, into God, or Jesus, or Divine, or Mother; but all teach some form of the laws of the universe.
There are many laws to the universe.
I am only discussing one of them right now.
The law of three is that law which states what you put out into the universe, grows, expands and finds it's way back - times three.
Lately known in the new age, guru circle, as "the Secret", or the Law of Return.
The Hindu's call this the law of reciprocity.
The Christians call it the Golden Rule, "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you". "What goes around comes around".
Gardner said, "mark well when you receive good, so equally are you bound to return good threefold. The Witch knows she will get three times what she gave, so she does not strike hard".
I believe in the law of three.
Call that silly, superstitious, naive. Call it what you will, but it is one of my basic rules to live by.
Always has been, always will be.
From the day he had cognitive thought, I taught my child the law of three. I lived it by example, I taught it by rhetoric. All choices should be made with clear vision, and clean intent, as there are consequences for all actions, and one must live within the tenet of the Rule of three.
I enforced it so strongly in my parenting that to this day, my son lives with this as one of his basic tenets of life. It is just one of his ethics of living. One of the ways of surviving the journey in wisdom.
It pleases me when he finds comfort and confidence in the law of three.
He didn't always though.
There were days when we would discuss this, and he would say, "Ya. Well I just wish it didn't take so long. I wish I could actually be around to see the return in action."
Sometimes we don't get to see it. Sometimes we don't recognize it when we do see it, as we cannot see behind the door and into the hearts of those who have trespassed against us.
The law of three does not promise revenge. It promises the opportunity for learning. It promises redemption for those willing to embrace it.
Most are not prepared to embrace it.
As one very cognizant of the law of three, all choices, all actions are just naturally taken with clear intent. I don't need to think my choices too often. I am not required to weigh my ethics. I just live them.
Does this mean that I always take the high road? I always live my life in purity? I am just naturally a good person?
Hell no!
Like many, there are a small select few names sitting in the deep freeze of my freezer right at this moment.
Even my very atheist husband will not touch those names or go near them when digging around for the frozen Pizza. Although I have noticed him to do a quiet little count from time to time, to see if the numbers have grown. Usually after he and I have had an argument.
I've participated in my own mirror spells, independently and in conspiracy with other Witches for a common cause.
Here is where I do need to consider and weigh my choices and ethics.
When I take action of that kind, I know what I'm doing and I know the possible consequences of the action.
Those who send out calls to Witches for energy or action do not always recognize what they are asking.
They are asking for a piece of soul. They are asking for a Witch to take on a possible consequence of the action, and they are also putting themselves as risk. Their intent is added to the energy of that of the Witch, and that affects the outcome, the risk, the return.
Like many of you, I have received the emails, the calls for help.
I read those calls and I think to myself, "Lady (or Buddy) I don't even know you. Why the hell would I put myself in this position for you?!"
There are very few for whom I will answer the call. Family, some select friends, those I love and trust, and feel I have a clear vision of the fiber of their morality.
I do not send out intent to harm. I send out reflection of the person's own actions. Nothing more, nothing less added but merely the reflection of their own actions returned to them quickly.
All I am asking, is for the law of three to do it's job NOW.
Those who have harmed me the most, have never received harmful intent from me. I may have tried to stop them. I may have tried to reflect their actions to them. I may have tried to drop the scales from their eyes so they could see. I may have tried to send wisdom or kindness or peace into their hearts. But I have never sent harm to them or to theirs.
I love my own too much.
It is very very easy to live within the law of three.
It is what I am.
There are those who will see this guiding rule of my life as naive. Those of a much more warrior spirit then myself. Strike first, strike hard, and strike to wound might be their philosophy.
Take no prisoners, show no mercy, have no compassion, they would tell you.
It is survival of the fittest. I am blessed to be greatly loved by some of those people.
Maybe that is the balance the universe has provided to people like myself.
Balance, another law of the universe...for another day.
