Crowley and Thelema
Blasphemy?
I have had a theory that was working at the back of my mind for quite a while. Granted, I am prone to putting everyone under a psychological microscope. Psychology is not an exact science; in fact, there are those who still maintain it isn't a science at all.
This theory took a while to puzzle together. There were things that just didn't ring true with what can be discerned from what we know about Crowley.
I am finding myself, more and more, believing the Crowley was having us all 'on.' Whether intentionally or not, that has yet to be seen. If, in fact, it is ever seen.
I have my own hypothesis; I think Crowley and Kelly were sharing a delusion - compounded by Kelly's mental illness and Crowley's heroin addiction.
When you are in a heroin induced state - it is very easy to be influenced by the moods and goings on around you. If Kelly was experiencing a psychotic episode - it is more than a possibility that Crowley would have picked up on this and turned it into his reality.
He screwed up - he made himself persona non grata in the Ceremonial arenas to which he aspired. With his personality - admitting that he had fucked up would have been anathema. No way would he have done it. So what could he do? He had to prove himself - no matter what the cost and the cost proved to be very high; emotionally, definitely financially, physically and if it can be applied to him, spiritually.
Everything in that damn Liber Al is simply an extension of what Crowley wanted. It is Life According to Aleister. Do what thou wilt. Find your own Will - do your own Great Work and let's not forget the hedonism.
How would a man, living in England in that time frame with homosexual or bi-sexual tendencies fulfill his needs?
Why, by making them part of his philosophy - a part of his 'belief' system. How could he justify his entirely self-centered lifestyle? Build it into a 'belief' system. But there was the morality aspect. It continued to permeate. Try as he might, it continued to dog him.
Crowley must have made B.T. Barnum proud. Mind you next to that other charlatan - L. Ron Hubbard, Crowley pales in comparison; maybe Hubbard learned from Crowley's mistakes?
Create your own religion. It is a popular past time - look around: Corellians, Black Forest, Raelians, Solar Temple.
Crowley really had no choice. Like others of his class - he craved respect but, the problems he faced were insurmountable. Having established himself as somewhat of an oddball in England, at that time - it would have been virtually impossible for him to gain respect. So? Live up (or down) to society's expectations. Which is exactly what he did - with abandon.
Consciously or not - Liber Al is just that...Liber Aleister.
